DIY PUFF SLEEVE TIERED DRESS (Bow tie sleeve, v-neck, fitted waist) | Step by step sewing tutorial

Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.

In today's tutorial, I'm going to share with you how I made my Puff sleeve tiered dress with bow tie sleeve, deep v-neck and fitted waist. This dress is a perfect outfit for spring-summer season. And it's very easy to make.

So I hope you like it and try it out. Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 3m of Boil fabric in green color

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Long stick

  • Elastic band

MAKING THE PATTERNS

Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 1:13 to 3:27.

Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!

THE FRONT PATTERN

  1. Cut a rectangle with 42 cm length, which is the width from the shoulder to above the belly button, and 70 cm width, which is the length from the neck to the wrist.

  2. From one end of the width line, mark at 10 cm inside.

  3. Mark down on the length line at 26 cm, which is the depth of the V-neck.

  4. Connect the two marks together.

  5. At the other length line, mark at 5 cm from the top.
Connect this mark to the neck mark on the width line. This will be the shoulder line of the dress.

  6. From the end of the shoulder line, move down and mark at 25 cm, which is the width of the sleeve.

  7. From one end on the other width line, mark at 26.5 cm inside, which is a quarter of the bust size plus 6 cm.

  8. Connect this mark to the mark on the length line next to it.

  9. Draw a curved line based on that line to create the under armpit line for the sleeve part.

  10. After cutting, there will be the front pattern of the top bodice of the dress.

THE BACK PATTERN

  1. To make the back pattern, fold the paper in half first.

  2. Use the front pattern to draw along the neck area at the folded part.

  3. Because the back pattern will be 2 cm wider at the shoulder, add 2 cm extra at the shoulder line.

  4. Draw a curved line at the top of the shoulder line to create a neck for the back pattern.

  5. After cutting, there will be the back pattern of the top bodice.

SEWING THE DRESS

THE TOP PART

Apply the patterns to the fabric and cutting. Don't forget to overlock the fabric after that.

At the two pieces of the front pattern, connect them together at the middle first.

However, keep around 11 cm open at the end of the shoulder line to create the open area for the sleeve later.

Fold the end fabric at the end of the shoulder line inside two times and sew to finish it.

After that, connect two under armpit lines of the front and the back bodice together.

At the end of the sleeve, making a loose seam first then create the puffy later.

Make sure the final width of the puffy should be bigger than the wrist.

Cut a long rectangle with 5 cm width and around 60 cm length or longer to hem the end of the sleeve and also to create a tie there.

Then sew to make the first seam.

After that, fold the other side of the rectangle inside two times and make the second seam.

To hem the neck of the top bodice, use a long rectangle with around 2.5 cm width and 120 cm length.

The way to hem the neck is quite similar to the way done for the hand.

However, the folding to finish the hem will be inside instead of outside like the sleeve.

At the end of the top bodice, connect two front parts together at the gap of the neck.

And finish the top of the dress.

THE BOTTOM PART

  1. Cut a trapezoid with 53 cm for the shorter width, which is the same with the end of the top bodice, and 69 cm for the longer width, which is 1.5 times a half of the hip size.

  2. The length of the trapezoid is 25 cm, which is the half of the width from the belly button to above the knees It is the length of the dress that is wanted.

  3. Make a curved line at the short width then cut.

Connect two pieces together at the curved line and in the first tier of the bottom part.

The second tier is two rectangles with 25 cm length, which is the same with the first tier, and 105 cm width, which is 1.5 times the width of the first tier.

Connect two pieces of the second tiers together at the width line first.

Then fold the end fabric inside two times at one end of the length line and sew to finish it.

At the other end of the length line, making a loose seam first then create a puffy later.

Make sure the final length of the puffy has to be 69 cm, which is the same length of the first tier.

Then connect the first tier and the second tier together to finish the bottom of the dress.

THE LINING PART

  1. Because this fabric is a little thin and can see through, add a lining for the bottom part.

  2. Cut two rectangles with 45 cm length, which is 5 cm shorter than the length of the bottom part, and 69 cm width, which is 1.5 times a half of the hip size. It is also the width at the bottom of the first tier.

  3. Mark at 8 cm inside from two ends of the top width line, so the width between two marks will be 53 cm, which is the same with the width at the top of the first tier and also the same with the width at the end of the top bodice.

  4. Then connect two marks to two ends of the other width line.

  5. Also make a curved line at the top to make it easier when connecting all pieces together later.

Sew two pieces of the lining together at the side first.

Then fold the end of the lining inside two times to finish it.

Now it's time to connect the top and the bottom of the dress together at the waist.

After fixing them together, keep connecting the lining part to the waist then sew.

Use an elastic band with 1.5 cm width to make the waist for the dress to fit the body when wearing.

So create a fabric hole with around 2 cm width at the waist for the elastic band to go through.

Then sew and leave a small unsewn space for the elastic band to go through later.

Don't forget to close the fabric hole after connecting two ends of the elastic band together.
