DIY Paperbag Shorts from scratch (High waist - Wide leg - Side pockets) | Simple sewing tutorial

Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.

In today's tutorial, I'm going to share with you a very details on how to make a Paperbag shorts from scratch. This is a super comfy but pretty shorts that you can wear in the different styles.

That's why I hope you like it and try it out soon. So let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 100% linen fabric in light grey color

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Long stick

  • Elastic band

MAKING THE PATTERNS

Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 2:32 to 7:13.

Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!

THE FRONT PATTERN

  1. Cut a rectangle with 27 cm width (a quarter of your hip size plus 4 cm) and 42 cm length (the length of the shorts plus 4 cm).

  2. On the length line, mark at 29 cm, which is a quarter of the hip side plus 6 cm, and the depth of the crotch of the shorts that you want.

  3. Then, draw a line to connect two marks on the length line together. From this line, draw another line at 7 cm on the bigger side of the first rectangle.

  4. Also, draw a 3 cm extra from this line to connect to the end of the line just drawn before that to create a crotch line of the front of the shorts by drawing a curved line between them.

  5. At the top of the front pattern, mark at 24 cm, which is a quarter of the hip size plus 1 cm.

  6. Then, connect this mark to the curved line to finish the crotch line for the front pattern and move down 1 cm on the top line of the front pattern.

  7. Then, draw two straight lines from two ends of the new top line to create the waist part for the shorts. And it's 12 cm, which is two times the width of the waistband that you want for your shirt.

  8. At the end of the pattern, draw 3 cm extra to make the hem for the shorts.

  9. After that, add 1 cm for seam allowance outside the cutting lines. However, have 4 cm for seam allowance for the line at the end of the hem because you want to create a folding line there later.

THE BACK PATTERN

  1. Cut the same rectangle as the front pattern. The way to make the crotch line for the back pattern is similar to the front pattern.

  2. However, instead of adding 3 cm extra, add 9.2 cm extra, which is 1/10 of the hip size. So, at the top of the pattern, make it higher than the front by increasing 2 cm at the waistline.

  3. Then, add the waistband similar to the way you did to the front pattern.

  4. After all, don't forget to add the seam allowance to finish the pattern.

THE POCKET PATTERN

  1. Cut a rectangle with 15 cm width and 28 cm length to create the pocket pattern.

  2. From the middle on one length line, draw a curved line to connect to the end of the other length line.

  3. Then, cut that curved part to finish the pattern for the pocket.

SEWING THE SHORTS

Apply all the patterns to the fabric and cut. Cut two pieces of each pattern, two pieces of the back pattern, and four pieces of the pocket pattern.

After cutting, don't forget to overlock to protect the fabric.

Connect two pieces of the front part and two pieces of the back part together at the crotch line. Then, sew.

At two sides of the front part, mark 16 cm down from the top.

Then, add one piece of the pockets at each side from that mark and sew.

Do the same for the back part.

After that, connect the front and the back of the shorts together at two sides and at the end of the crotch.

At the pocket area, mark 15 cm from the top of the pocket for the open area of the pocket where you can put your hand in.

Then, sew the rest of it to create a depth pocket.

At the top of the shorts, draw a line at 13 cm under it first.

Then, fold the top fabric to that line to create a waistband for the shorts.

Remember to keep a small unsewn space for the elastic band to go through later to create the ruffle at the top of the waistband.

Use the elastic band that's a smaller width than the waistband and measure the width of the elastic band to make the fabric hole for it.

Then, sew.

Cut an elastic band with 64 cm length, which is the same as your waist size.

Don't forget to close the unsewn space after connecting two ends of the elastic bands together.

To the end of the shorts, to create a folding up there, draw a line at 12 cm from the end first.

Then, fold the end fabric to that line and sew.

After that, fold the end of the hem outside around 3.5 cm and use the iron to create a folding there.

To make the belt loop for the waistband, cut a long rectangle with 2 cm width and around 30 cm length.

Fold two length lines of the rectangle together around 0.5 cm first.

Then keep folding them again and sew.

After that, cut it into smaller pieces with around 7 cm length.

Connect one end of the belt loop to the waistband first.

Then connect the second end.

To make the fabric belt, cut two rectangles with 12 cm width and around 70 cm length.

Connect two rectangles together to have a long one.

After that, fold two sides of the length line together to create a fabric belt.

Remember to keep a small unsewn space in the middle to turn the belt right-side out after.

And iron it to keep the folding and make the belt look nicer.
