DIY Vintage Midi Slip dress (with no zipper) | Dating wardrobe | Ep 1 - First date | Sewing tutorial

Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.

In today's tutorial, I'm so happy to introduce you all my new series "Dating wardrobe" where I will share with you my picks for the dating outfits I would love to wear on the different types of dating. And in this video, we will start with the first date outfit idea. It's the Vintage midi slip dress. It's in sleeveless style with v-neck, gathered fabric and no zipper. It's quite elegant but not too sexy or casual and also very comfortable. Therefore it's such a perfect outfit for the first date.

So I hope you like it and try it out. Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 3m of thick chiffon fabric

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Long stick

MAKING THE PATTERNS

Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 1:36 to 6:39.

Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!

THE TOP BODICE PATTERN

  1. To make the top bodice pattern, draw a horizontal line and a straight line cutting each other first.

  2. From the cutting point, mark up 10 cm on the straight line.
It's half of the neck of the dress that is wanted.

  3. From the cutting point, mark to the left 24 cm on the horizontal line. It's the depth of the neck of the dress that is wanted. It is the length from the shoulder to the middle of the chest.

  4. Then connect two marks together to create a front neckline.

  5. From the cutting point, keep marking up 15 cm on the straight line. It's half of the inside shoulder size.

  6. From this mark, draw a 2 cm perpendicular line.
Then connect one end of this line to the mark on the neck to finish the shoulder line of the dress.

  7. After that, draw another straight line 20 cm from the first one. It's the quarter of the bust size. The width of this new line will be 21 cm, which is a quarter of the bust size plus 1 cm.

  8. Then draw a curved line to connect the end of this new line to the end of the shoulder line to create a sleeve line for the top bodice.

  9. From the first straight line, draw another one at 40 cm from it. It is the length from the shoulder to around 2 cm above the belly button. It is the end of the top bodice that is wanted. The width of this new line will be 20 cm, which is the quarter of the bust size.

  10. Then connect one end of this line to the end of the sleeve line to create the sideline of the top bodice.
Make it a big curve for this line after that.

  11. Then connect the end of the sideline to the end of the neckline to finish the under bust line of the top bodice.

  12. Adding 1 cm for seam allowance after that. And the back pattern of the top bodice will be ready after cutting.

THE FRONT BODICE PATTERN

  1. To make the front pattern of the top bodice, copy the back pattern first.

  2. Then redraw the sleeve line to inside a bit for the front part of the sleeve.

  3. As there will be gathering fabric at the bust line, make it a big curve.

  4. And the front pattern of the top bodice will be ready after cutting.

THE BOTTOM DRESS PATTERN

  1. To make the pattern for the bottom of the dress, draw a horizontal line and a straight line cutting each other first.

  2. From the straight line, draw another one 14 cm next to it. It's the length from the end of the neck to the end of the top bodice.

  3. The length of the new straight line will be 19 cm, which is a quarter of the under bust size plus 2 cm.

  4. Then connect one end of this line to the cutting point.

  5. From the second straight line, make another one 25 cm next to it. It's a quarter of the hip size plus 2 cm. It's also the position of the biggest part of the butt. So the length of this line will be 24 cm, which is a quarter of the hip size plus 1 cm.

  6. Then connect one end of this line to the end of the second straight line to create a sideline for the bottom part.

  7. From the cutting point, mark at 77 cm, which is the length from the middle of the chest to over the knee. It's also the length of the dress that is wanted.

  8. Then draw the sideline to meet the ending line of the dress.

  9. From the end of the sideline, mark up 1.5 cm. Then connect it to the other end of the ending line.

  10. Based on this new line, draw a curved line to finish the ending line of the dress.

  11. At the top of the sideline, redraw it a bit to create a perpendicular look between the sideline and the under bust line.

  12. Adding 1 cm for seam allowance at the under bust line, the sideline, and the ending line. And the front pattern of the bottom dress will be ready after cutting.

  13. This pattern needs to be cut in fold fabric.

THE BACK PATTERN OF THE BOTTOM DRESS

  1. To make the back pattern of the bottom dress, draw a horizontal line at 2 cm from the edge of the paper.

  2. Then apply the front pattern to that line and copy it.

  3. Because of 2 cm extra, the under bust line of the back pattern needs to be adjusted to match the under bust line of the back pattern at the top bodice, So they can be connected together later.

  4. And the back pattern of the bottom dress will be ready after cutting.

  5. This pattern also needs to be cut in fold fabric.

SEWING THE DRESS

THE TOP PART

Start with the top bodice first.

Connect the front and the back of the top bodice together at the shoulder first.

Then make another piece like this to connect two pieces together at the neckline.

After sewing, draw one side that will be the inside part of the dress to make the understitching seam.

Then connect the sleeve line of two pieces together.

After sewing, turn the top bodice to hide all the seam inside.

Then connect the sideline of two pieces together.

Don't forget to iron all the seam after sewing.

After that, connect the under bust line of two pieces together.

Then make a loose seam at the under bust line at the front of the top bodice to create a gathering fabric there.

The final width of the gathering fabric will be the same with the under bust line at the front part of the bottom dress so you can connect them together later.

You will need two pieces like this.

THE BOTTOM PART

Moving to the bottom dress, cut a long fabric line with 4 cm width and around 80 cm length.

Connect two length lines together first.

Then use a long stick to turn it inside out to create a tie for the dress.

Make two ties for this dress.

Now connect the front and the back of the bottom dress together at two sides by the pins first.

After that, add the tie at 1 cm under the top of the sideline then sewing.

To finish the end of the dress, fold the end fabric inside around 1 cm first, then keep folding it again and sewing.

Make another piece like this but without a tie.

Now connect the top and the bottom of the dress together.

Connect the top to the bottom piece with the tie first.

After sewing, keep connecting the second piece of the bottom dress to the top part at the same seam.

By doing this way, the inside part of the dress will look nicer — but you can skip this step if not wanted or if there isn't enough fabric.
