DIY WRAP DRESS - Bridesmaid dress from scratch
Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.
In this tutorial, I'm sharing with you how I made the wrap dress as the bridesmaid dress for my friend's wedding. This's a very nice bridesmaid dress. It's also easy to fit to all body types.
So I hope you like it and try it out. Let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Around 2.5 m of silk in green/yellow color for each dress
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
Long stick
Zipper
Buttons
SEWING THE DRESS
THE FRONT PATTERN OF THE TOP
For the front pattern, draw a rectangle with the length is a half of the bust size and the width is from upper breast to belly button.
At the top of the left side, mark at 8 cm inside, which is the width from the shoulder to the breast.
After that, mark at 12 cm down, which is the width from the shoulder to over the armpit.
Then connecting two marks together. Also connect the first mark to the end of the right side.
To finish the front pattern, draw another line at 1 cm outside of the current lines. So the seam allowance is 1 cm.
THE BACK PATTERN OF THE TOP
Moving to the back pattern of the top, draw a rectangle with the length is a half of the bust size and the width is from upper breast to belly button - 12 cm.
Then adding 1 cm for seam allowance.
After having the patterns, apply them to the fabric and drawing. Remember, you will need 4 pieces of the front pattern and 2 pieces of the back pattern.
Next step, cutting 2 long rectangles with 3 cm width and around 50 cm length to make the shoulder ties for the dress.
Folding 2 sides of the length together and sewing.
After that, use a hair clip to upside the ties.
Then ironing to finish the ties.
Cut a small tie with 6 cm length at each tie.
Two short ties will be used for the back of the top.
Two long ties will be used for the front of the top.
From two sides of the back, mark at 11 cm inside.
So the width between two marks will be the width between 2 breasts.
Then fix two short ties into two marks.
Used a small ring to put in the short tie to connect to the long tie later.
After that first seam, make the second seam right next to it to gather all the extra fabric to one side.
Then iron to fix these seams.
Overlocking the rest of the back by the zigzag stitching on the sewing machine.
To the front of the top, fix the long tie to the top of the front.
Then sewing.
Doing similar to the back, make the second seam after that.
And ironing later.
Don't forget to overlocking the rest of the front too.
At the end of the front, make three pleated parts close to each other with around 1 cm each one.
They'll create the area for the bust when wearing. If you have a big breast, make sure to create a big pleated part.
After sewing, measure the length of the front again. Make sure it has to be around a half of your belly size.
Next step, connect the front and the back together at two sides. Then sewing and finish the top of the dress.
THE BOTTOM PATTERN OF THE DRESS
To the bottom of the dress, fold the fabric like a half circle first.
Then measure the position where the width is the same with the total width of the top and mark at two sides.
After that, check the length from the top to that mark.
Then drawing the lines with the same length in the middle to have the waistline of the bottom.
From the waistline, draw another line with the length from the belly button to over the knee, which is the length of the dress that is wanted.
You can adjust to make it longer or shorter for your dress.
After cutting, fold two sides of the bottom double time.
Then sewing.
Remember to check the length of the waistline in the end has to be the same with the top.
Now connecting the top and the bottom part of the dress together.
After that, finish the end of the dress by folding it twice and sewing.
Then connect the long tie and short tie together.
To make the waistband, cut 2 rectangles with 100 cm length and 10 cm width.
Fold two sides of the length together and sew first.
Then using a long stick to upside them.
Iron to keep the folding of the tie stay and not moving.
Fix the waistbands to two sides of the dress, at the connected part between the top and the bottom.
The last step is unsewing a small part at one side of the dress to create a hole for one waistband to go through when wearing.
