DIY Butterfly Sleeve Babydoll Dress from T-shirt

Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!

Today blog, I'm very excited to share with you my refashion idea old T-shirt into Butterfly Sleeve Babydoll Dress. This's very cute and comfortable dress that you can wear on your weekend or vacation. And it's easy to make by yourself. I made this dress base on my body size. However, I tried to show you the way to measure on your body size. So I hope you could understand.

Le't’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • T-shirt size: 02 unit

    • One T-shirt with your size (or 1 size bigger than your actual size)

    • One supper big size T-shirt (get as big as you have)

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

SEWING THE DRESS

THE TOP

The first step is to start with the M t-shirt.

From the shoulder, go down 28cm, which is the width from the shoulder to under the bust, and draw a line.

After cutting, you'll have the top of the dress.

At the bottom of the M t-shirt, measure the width of the fabric and split in half, which is 19cm each part.

These will be the width of the ruffle for the bottom of the dress.

THE RUFFLE

Because of that, at the XXL t-shirt, create the other 19cm width of fabrics.

These are referred to as the top, the middle, and the end part of the ruffle.

Now, connect the ruffle parts together.

First is the end part of the M t-shirt to the end part of the XXL t-shirt. This will be the lowest ruffle of the dress.

Cut one side of them first.

Then, connect them together using pins, and sew.

Second is the middle part of the XXL t-shirt to the top part of the XXL t-shirt.

However, just use one piece of the top part and keep one for later.

Similar to the first ruffle just made, connect them together using pins, then sew.

And we'll have the middle ruffle of the dress.

The third one is the top ruffle of the dress. It’s made from one piece of the top part of the XXL t-shirt to the middle part of the M t-shirt.

So, the dress will have 3 layers of ruffle.

The top layer is 1.5 times the width of the M t-shirt.

The second layer is 2 times the width of the M t-shirt.

And the last layer is 2.5 times the width of the M t-shirt.

Make the ruffle at each layer by making a loose seam at one edge.

Use the maximum range of the thread in the sewing machine to do it.

After sewing, keep one thread and pull the other one to create the ruffle.

Make sure the width of the first ruffle is the same as the width of the M t-shirt.

The width of the second ruffle is the same as the width of the first one. And the width of the last ruffle is the same as the width of the second one.

After that, connect each layer of ruffle together.

And you will have the full body for the bottom of the dress.

Then, connect it to the top of the dress.

Use pins to hold them together, and sew.

If a ruffle at the hands is desired, un-sew the hands part.

(This step can be skipped if not desired.)

Use the fabric from the hands to make the ruffle.

Cut a 9cm width of fabric from the hands.

Then, connect two of them together to have one ruffle for the new hands.

After sewing to connect them together, make a loose seam to create the ruffle.

Just like what was done to the ruffle of the bottom of the dress, keep one thread and pull the other one until the width of the ruffle fits the hands.

Then, connect it to the hands using pins and sew.

This is an adorable dress. It'll be suitable for your vacation or weekend outfit.

It's not very tight to your body so it's also suitable for any body types.

And it won't be too difficult to make. So I hope you will give it a try.
