DIY Puff sleeve tie front crop top from Men's shirt
Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!
I’m excited to share with you how to transform a man’s shirt into a puff sleeve tie front crop top. This crop top is not only perfect for the current hot weather in South Asian country, but also a stylish addition to your wardrobe.
The tutorial is straightforward, so don’t hesitate to give it a try.
So le't’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Men's shirt in XXL size and cotton fabric in white color
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
Long stick
SEWING THE CROP TOP
THE BODY
The first step is to remove the front pocket.
After that, cut the neck.
Then, un-sew the seams from the shoulder to the back.
Because of that, the new shoulder lines are not equal. So, cut the front shoulder line around 2 cm to make it equal to the back line.
Then, sew to connect them together to have a new shoulder line.
After that, make a loose seam at the top of the sleeve to create a puff for the crop top.
Use the maximum thread tension of the straight stitching to make a loose seam.
Remember the puff should be around the new shoulder line only.
THE SLEEVE
Moving to the end of the sleeve, draw a line at 25 cm from the end of the sleeve.
It’s right above the open area of the button.
After cutting, fold the end of the fabric inside two times and sew to finish the end of the sleeve.
To make the puffy at the end of the sleeve, draw a line at 5 cm from the end of the sleeve.
Then, cut a long rectangle with 3 cm width and around 50 cm length which is the width of the sleeve plus 2 cm.
Fold two length sides of the rectangle inside around 1 cm to hide the cutting of the fabric.
Then, make the circle fabric by sewing two ends of the width line together.
Now, connect the circle fabric to the sleeve at the line drawn before.
Then, sew in two sides of the circle fabric to create a fabric hole for the elastic band to go through later.
Use an elastic band with 1 cm width and around 24 cm length which is the width of the arm.
After connecting two ends of the elastic band together, close the small hole to fix the sleeve.
THE TOP
The width of the shoulder is 38 cm. So, from the end of the shoulder at the top of the sleeve, move to inside and mark at 20 cm which is half of the shoulder plus 1 cm for seam allowance.
Then, draw a straight line from that mark down to the end of the shirt.
From the top of the shoulder line, measure the length of the crop top wanted and mark at 40 cm which is the length from the shoulder to the belly button.
The area under the armpit will be the bust area of the crop top.
So, to make the crop top fit better at the waist and the butt, from the armpit, mark at 24 cm inside which is half of the bust size plus 3 cm.
Then, draw a new line from the mark at the shoulder line to this mark and cut the ending line.
After cutting, connect two pieces of the back together.
Moving to the front of the crop top, fold two pieces of the front together first.
Then, mark the depth of the neck at 21 cm from the top of the original neck, at the middle of the crop top.
From the end of the shoulder, mark at 9 cm inside so the width of the neck of the crop top will be 22 cm.
Then, connect the mark on the shoulder to the mark at the middle of the front.
After cutting, you will have the new v-neck for the front of the crop top.
To make the neck at the back, draw a curved line with around 3 cm deep then cut.
Because it’s a tied front crop top, at the end of each piece at the front, there is a long tie that will connect to the crop top later.
To make it look nicer when wearing, hide the connected part at the knob of the ties.
Therefore, cut the extra fabric at the end of each piece of the front crop top.
Use a long rectangle with 2 cm width to finish the hem of the neck.
Connect the long rectangle to the neck and make the first seam.
After that, fold the end fabric of the long rectangle inside two times to hide the cutting. Then, make the second seam to finish the neck.
Do the same to finish the hem at the end of the crop top.
Use the leftover fabric to make the ties for the crop top.
Fold the fabric first.
Then, at one side of the folding fabric, mark at 10 cm which is the width at the end of one piece at the front crop top plus 1 cm for seam allowance.
At the other end of the folding fabric, mark at 4 cm which is the width of the tie that is wanted.
Then, connect two marks at two sides together.
Draw the curved line then cutting.
After sewing, use a long stick to turn the tie right side out.
Don't forget to iron it to make it look nicer.
The last step is connecting the ties to the end of the pieces at the front of the crop top.
