DIY Denim set from old jeans - Refashion jeans into crop top & skirt
Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!
Today video, I'm so excited to share with you how I refashioned my sister's old jeans into my denim set with crop top and skirt. This DIY is easy to do and you can do it by yourself. It turns out over my expectation. You can wear them together as a denim set or wear separately with other items.
I hope you'll enjoy this DIY and found it useful. And let's give it a try.
So let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Old jeans
Thread
Measuring tape
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
SEWING THE SET
THE SKIRT
First step, cut the two legs of the jeans at the rip-off.
After that, un-sew the seams at the crotch, doing it for both the front and back of the jeans.
Then, connect one side of the leg to the other, holding them together with pins before sewing.
Don't worry if the initial cut wasn't perfect—you can trim it again after fixing the legs together.
Next, adjust the waist of the jeans to fit the body.
Un-sew the waistband at the middle of the back first.
Then, un-sew the crotch seam.
Cut the waistband.
Fold the waistband inward to make it smaller, then sew along the fold.
After sewing, fix one side of the crotch to the other side to match the new waistband length.
Use pins to secure the right area, then sew.
Finally, sew the two sides of the waistband together to finish the skirt.
THE TOP
Now, to make the crop top from the jeans' legs, start by cutting the ends of the legs.
And un-sew the side seams.
Because the front of the jeans is ripped, use the back of the legs to create the main body for the crop top.
Draw two rectangles, each 18cm width (= 1/2 the width of the crop top) and 46cm length (=1/2 bust size + 4 cm).
Then overlocking to protect the cutting.
Connect them together at one side.
At the top of the main body, from outside, go inside 12 cm and mark there.
So the width between 2 marks will be 22 cm, which is the width between 2 breasts.
From that mark, draw straight down and mark at 10 cm.
Then draw an arc line from the first mark to the last one to create the armhole for the crop top.
After that, fold the top of the main body inside and sew.
Use the front legs to make the long fabrics with 3 cm width.
After cutting, connect them together to have two long fabrics. Make it as long as possible, then sew.
Now connect the long fabrics to 2 armholes of the crop top, then sew them together.
After sewing, fold the other side of the long fabric double inside to make the bias tape.
Do this for the whole long fabric.
At the end of the crop top, mark 10 cm from both sides.
Then draw a straight line from that mark up to the middle of the crop top.
After that, draw another straight line 5 cm from the previous one.
Then draw a triangle between 2 lines.
Fold the triangles in half and hold them with pins, then sew.
That's how the space for the breast of the crop top is created. If there is a larger bust, just make bigger triangles.
Now, make the fabric loops for the crop top.
Cut 2 rectangles with 3 cm width and 18 cm length.
Then fold two sides of the rectangle inside to create bias tape, then sew them together.
After that, cut each into 3 pieces with 6 cm length each.
Then fold each piece in half and fix them to two sides of the main body.
Each side of the main body will have 3 loops. Then sew them to keep everything in place.
After that, fold two sides of the crop top inside to hide the ends of the loops, then sew.
Last step is finishing the bottom of the crop top.
Fold it inside, hold with pins, then sew

Let’s check out the final transformation—it turned out even better than I expected!
Reusing old jeans is such a great idea, and you can style them as a denim set or mix and match with other pieces.
And it won't be too difficult to make. So I hope you will give it a try.
