DIY KIMONO DRESS/Bathrobe from scratch - Me-made summer collection - Ep 5
Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.
Today's tutorial, I'm going to share with you how I made this Kimono dress or Bathrobe from scratch. It's a perfect dress for summer that you can wear as a casual outfit or swimming cover at the beach.
So I hope you will try it out. Let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
2m of loose linen in printing yellow color
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
Long stick
MAKING THE PATTERNS
Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 0:18 to 5:37.
Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!
THE FRONT BODY OF THE DRESS PATTERN
Cut two rectangles with 70 cm width, which is 1.5 times a half of your hip size, and 95 cm length, which is the length of the dress you want + 5 cm. After cutting, you will have the front and the back body of the dress.
At the front of the dress, mark at the middle of the width to divide the rectangle into two small ones.
After that, draw a straight line at 2 cm inside of the width to make the length of the front body shorter than the back 2 cm.
From the end of the width, go up 25 cm and mark there.
Then connect that mark to the end of the small rectangle.
And do the same for the other one.
After cutting by the drawing lines, you will have two pieces of the front body of the dress.
THE BACK BODY OF THE DRESS PATTERN
At the back of the dress, mark at 25 cm from two sides of the width.
Then mark at the middle of the gap between two marks. It's also the neck area of the dress. From that mark, go down 3 cm and mark the next one.
Then connect the last mark to two marks made in the beginning.
And draw a curved line after that.
THE HAND OF THE DRESS PATTERN
Make the hand of the dress by cutting two rectangles with 52 cm width, which is the width of the hand that you want + 2 cm, and 60 cm length, which is the length from your shoulder to the wrist + 8 cm.
It’s recommended to make a big width for the hands to feel comfortable when wearing this dress.
SEWING THE DRESS
After cutting, overlock all pieces of the dress by using the zigzag stitching on the sewing machine.
Next step, connect the front and the back body of the dress together at the shoulder by the pins. Then sew.
After that, from the top of the shoulder, go down 25 cm and mark at the front body.
Then connect the hand to the main body of the dress from that mark and sew.
Now connect the ends of the hands and two sides of the front and the back together.
At the hand, mark at 16 cm inside the end.
Then fold the end of the hand into that mark and sew to finish the hands.
To make the hem for the neck of the dress, cut a long rectangle with 10 cm width and 220 cm length, which is two times the length of the dress + 30 cm or longer.
Then use the iron to create the folding.
After that, connect the hem to the dress at two sides of the front and at the neck.
Use the pins to fix them together. Then sew.
To the end of the dress, draw a horizontal line at 10 cm inside the end.
Then fold the end of the fabric to that line and sew to finish the end.
To make the waist belt for the dress, use a rectangle with 10 cm width and around 150 cm length. You can make it longer if you want.
Fold two sides of the rectangle together. Then sew.
Remember to keep a small un-sew space at the middle of the waist belt to upside it later.
Use a long stick to upside it.
Then iron to fix the seam and make it nicer.
