DIY Maxi skirt with gathered fabric at the front and elastic waistband at the back
DIY Maxi skirt with gathered fabric at the front and elastic waistband at the back
Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.
In today's tutorial, I'm going to share with you how I made a maxi skirt in a simple way. This is a perfect skirt to mix & match for this season.
That's why I hope you like it and try it out soon. So let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
2m of soft cotton fabric
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
Long stick
MAKING THE PATTERNS
Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 0:37 to 1:25.
Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!
THE SKIRT PATTERN
For the main part of the skirt, the simple and easy way is cutting a rectangle with the width of your waist size or 1.5 times your waist size, and the length of the rectangle will be the length of the skirt that you want. Don't forget to add 1 cm for seam allowance for the pattern before cutting.
THE WAISTBAND PATTERN
For the front waistband, it's a rectangle with the width of half of your waist size plus 2 cm for seam allowance and the length is two times the length of the waistband that you want plus 2 cm for seam allowance.
For the back waistband, it is a rectangle with the width at the same as the main part of the skirt and the length is the same length as the front waistband.
THE SIDE POCKET PATTERN
Add two side pockets to this skirt for more function.
SEWING THE SKIRT
THE SKIRT PART
From one width line of the rectangle, mark down on the length line at 8 cm, which is the position of the side pocket that's wanted.
Then, add the pocket there later and sew.
Do the same for the other piece of the skirt.
After that, connect two pieces of the skirt together at two length lines.
From the top of the pocket, mark down 13 cm, which is the width of the open part of the pocket where you can put your hand in.
Then, sew the rest together to create a depth for the side pocket.
At the top of the skirt, choose one rectangle to be the front part of the skirt first.
Then, make two loose seams there.
After sewing, create the gathering fabric by pulling two front threads while keeping the other one.
Make sure the final width of the gathering fabric will be half of your waist size.
THE WAISTBAND PART
Moving to the waistband, also cut a smaller rectangle for the lining of the front part before using the iron to connect the lining to the front waistband.
Connect two parts of the waistband together at two side lines first. Then, connect one side of the waistband to the top part of the skirt. Make sure you connect the front waistband to the front part of the skirt and the back waistband to the back part of the skirt. Then, sew. After that, fold the other side of the back waistband inside 1 cm first, then keep folding it over the first seam around 0.5 cm and sew. Make sure your seam will be right at the first seam, so you can hide the stitching.
After the first seam, cut the end fabric in half first.
Then fold the other side of the pocket over it and make the second seam.
Do the same for the other side of the front bodice.
CONNECT 2 JACKETS TOGETHER
Now connect two jackets together.
Make sure the inside face will face each other.
Connect the sleeve lines together to make sure the sleeve won't be moving when wearing the jacket.
The seam can be made over the first one or next to the first one.
After that, connect the rest of the jacket together and sewing.
Then use bias tape with 1.5 cm width to cover them.

And I finished this DIY — here’s the final result!
This jacket is super cool with its two different sides, making it easy to mix and match without needing a bunch of jackets.
