DIY Refashion a sweater into 2 pieces matching set
Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!
Today’s blog, I’m going to transform my old sweater into 2 pieces matching set. It's very easy to make and just take you about 30 minutes to finish. It's also very easy to mix & match with the different styles and for the different occasion.
So let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
An old sweater
Elastic bands (3 cm and 1 cm width)
Thread
Pins
Safety pins
SEWING THE MATCHING SET
THE BODY
The first step is to cut off the sleeves of the sweater.
Then, draw a straight line right under the neckline of the sweater and cut along the line.
THE BOTTOM
Now you have the main part for the bottom of the set.
Because the bottom part includes a small section from the sleeves, draw a line to connect the top of the skirt to the current seam on both sides.
Sew along these lines.
Then, cut the extra fabric. And, overcast the edges to protect the fabric at the seams.
Next, use a 3 cm wide elastic band to create the waistband at the top of the skirt.
To determine the width of the fabric fold, place the elastic band on the fabric and measure the width, which should be 4 cm.
Use pins to hold the fabric in place before sewing.
When sewing, leave a small hole to insert the elastic band.
Use two safety pins: one to anchor one end of the elastic band to the fabric, and the other to guide the band through the waistband casing.
Sew the ends of the elastic band together and close the hole.
THE TOP
To create the top of the matching set, use the fabric from the sleeves.
First, cut the sleeves along the seams, then place them together before drawing.
Draw a rectangle measuring 16 cm high and 40 cm wide, then cut along the lines.
After that, sew the sides of the rectangles together and overcast the edges to protect the fabric and seams.
Use a 1 cm wide elastic band for the top. Measure the width of the fabric fold, pin it in place, and sew, just as you did for the bottom.
After that, use the safety pins to put the elastic band to inside the fabric hole.
Then sew two ends of the elastic band together and close the fabric hole.
THE STRAP
To add straps to the top, use leftover fabric from the sweater.
Cut two rectangles, each 5 cm high and about 25 cm wide.
After that, fold two ends of the rectangle together to make the fabric hole and sew.
After sewing, use the safety pins to upside them.
Then, iron them to keep them flat and straight.
Attach the straps to the top by measuring and marking their positions.
For the front of the top, mark 6 cm in from each side.
For the back, mark 8 cm in from each side.
Pin the straps in place and sew them securely.

And we finish the top of the matching set!
This set fits perfectly, offering a touch of subtle sexiness that's not too over the top. I love how versatile it is – paired with an oversized sweater, it has a relaxed, casual vibe, while with a blazer, it transforms into a chic outfit perfect for a night out.
And it won't be too difficult to make. So I hope you will give it a try.
