DIY REVERSIBLE JUMPSUIT | Vacation wardrobe (Ep 3)| Step by step sewing tutorial

Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.

In today's tutorial, I'm going to share with you how I made my Reversible jumpsuit. If you don't know, I'm quite addicted to jumpsuit. So Jumpsuit is one of the "must have" item I always put in my vacation wardrobe. And whenever it comes to jumpsuit, I want more than one choice. That's why this Reversible jumpsuit is just perfect for me. Because I can wear it with 2 faces in completely 2 different styles.

So I hope you like it and try it out. Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 2m of cotton fabric in floral printing and 2m of blank cotton fabric

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Long stick

  • Zipper

  • Buttons

MAKING THE PATTERNS

Here’s the pattern for the project. To get a clear understanding of all the measurements needed for the pattern, watch the video from 0:50 to 5:14.

Remember, you can adjust these measurements to fit your own dimensions!

THE BACK PATTERN

  1. To make the back pattern, start with the pants first.

  2. Draw a rectangle with 28 cm width, which is a quarter of the hip size plus 5 cm, and 38 cm length, which is the length from the belly button to where the length of the jumpsuit should be.

  3. From the top of the pants, draw a straight line 32 cm under it. It is a quarter of the hip size plus 1/10 of the hip size. This will be the depth of the crotch line of the pants of the jumpsuit.

  4. From this line, draw another one 7 cm next to it and closer to the top line. This will be the hip line of the pants that can cover the biggest part of the butt.

  5. On the first straight line, draw a 9.2 cm extra, which is 1/10 of the hip size.

  6. Then, connect the end of this line to the hip line.

  7. Based on that, draw a curved line to finish the crotch line of the pants.

  8. Then, finish the inside leg for the pants.

  9. From one end at the top line of the pants, mark 1 cm inside, then connect this mark to one end of the hip line.

  10. From this mark, keep marking 25 cm on the top line, which is a quarter of the hip size plus 2 cm.

  11. Then, connect this new mark to the end of the curved line at the crotch line made before to finish the new crotch line for the pants.

THE TOP BODICE OF THE BACK JUMPSUIT

  1. To make the top bodice of the back jumpsuit, draw a horizontal line from the top of the crotch line.

  2. The length of this horizontal line is 42 cm, which is the length from the shoulder to the belly button.

  3. Then, draw a straight line at the end of this horizontal line.

  4. After that, keep drawing another straight line 2.5 cm next to the first one to create the neckline of the back jumpsuit later.

  5. From the top of this straight line, mark out 8 cm, which is half of the width of the neck.

  6. Then, connect this mark to the end of the horizontal line.

  7. Based on it, draw a curved line to finish the neckline of the back jumpsuit.

  8. From the top of the neckline, mark down 20 cm, which is half of the shoulder.

  9. Then, draw a horizontal line to cut the first straight line.

  10. After that, connect this cutting point to the end of the neckline to finish the shoulder line for the back jumpsuit.

  11. Keep drawing the shoulder line and mark at 25 cm, which is the length of the sleeve of the jumpsuit.

  12. Then, draw a perpendicular line from the end of the shoulder line.

  13. The length of this line will be 20 cm, which is the length of the sleeve. It is 1/5 of the bust size plus 3 cm.

  14. After that, draw a line to connect the end of the sleeve line to the top of the pants to finish the sideline of the jumpsuit.

  15. Add 1 cm for seam allowance, and the back pattern of the jumpsuit will be complete after cutting.

THE FRONT PATTERN

  1. To make the front pattern, copy the back pattern first. But for the crotch line of the pants, instead of making 9.2 cm extra on the first straight line, make 4.6 cm, which is 1/20 of the hip size.

  2. From the end of the neckline, mark down 20 cm, which is the depth of the neck.

  3. Then, connect this mark to the other end of the back neckline to create the front neckline for the pattern.

  4. Make this line a big curve to make it nicer, and the front pattern of the jumpsuit will be complete after cutting.

SEWING THE JUMPSUIT

After cutting two pieces of the front jumpsuit, connect them together by the crotch line.

For the back of the jumpsuit, before sewing, mark at 24 cm from the top to create the open area for the jumpsuit to be worn.

Make sure the total open space from the front neck to this mark is bigger than the hip size.

Then, sew the rest of the crotch line of the back jumpsuit pieces together.

After that, connect the front and the back of the jumpsuit together at the shoulder, the sideline, and the inside leg line.

Do the same process for two layers of fabric chosen.

Then, connect the two jumpsuits together at the neck with pins first.

Next, mark the position where the tie will be placed to close the back of the jumpsuit.

After sewing, turn them inside out to hide the seam.

Fold two length lines of the rectangle to the middle first, then fold it again to create a tie.

Six pieces like this are needed.

Place the ties in the middle between the two jumpsuits at the marked positions before sewing.

After that, turn the inside face of the two jumpsuits inside out so both sides will be the outer face of the jumpsuit.

From the end of the leg, draw a line 38 cm above it, which is the desired position of the waist for the jumpsuit—right at the belly button.

From this line, draw two more lines 2.3 cm apart from each other. This spacing is slightly bigger than the width of the elastic band that will be inserted to create a waistband later.

Make sure both pieces of the jumpsuit stay in the same position.

Then, sew them together along the chosen lines, leaving a small unsewn space for the elastic band to pass through later.

Use an elastic band with 2 cm width and 64 cm length, which is the waist size.

Then put the elastic band through the fabric hole.

Then sew the two ends of the elastic band together and close the unsewn space.

For the sleeves, first sew the ends of both sleeves together.

Then, cut two rectangles into two layers of fabric with 6 cm length (the desired length of the folded fabric) plus 3 cm, and 42 cm width (the width of the sleeve) plus 2 cm for seam allowance.

Connect two rectangles together along one width line first.

Then, connect the length lines together after sewing to create a circular fabric piece.

After that, connect the other width line of the circular fabric to the end of the sleeve and make the first seam.

Make sure the face of the circular fabric is different from the face of the sleeve so that when the end of the sleeve is folded, it will match the two layers of fabric.

After the first seam, fold the other side of the circular fabric inside by around 1 cm first, then fold it over the first seam and make the second seam.

Make sure that the connection between the two layers of fabric is equal on both sides.

Use the same method to finish the ends of the legs for the jumpsuit.
