DIY Ruffle hem skirt from old shirt

Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!

Today's blog, I'm going to share with you another idea to transform a normal shirt into this ruffle hem skirt.

So let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Old shirt in L size (It should be bigger than your hip size)

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

SEWING THE SKIRT

THE BODY

The first step is to remove the front pocket.

After that, draw a horizontal line at the end of the shirt.

From that line, go up 35cm and draw another horizontal line. This is the length of the skirt that is wanted, minus 10cm.

After cutting, measure the width of the skirt by cutting the extra fabric at two sides.

Make sure the width of the skirt is half of the hip size plus 3cm or bigger if a fitted skirt is not desired.

Connect two sides together and sew.

Overlock the fabric after that to protect it.

THE RUFFLE

Use the fabric from two sleeves of the shirt to make the ruffle hem for the skirt.

Cut two rectangles with 12 cm width and the maximum length that can be obtained from each sleeve.

Then, connect all of them together to have a long circle fabric.

After sewing, don’t forget to overlock the fabric to make the cutting look nicer.

At one edge of the fabric, fold it twice and sew it.

At the other edge, overlock to protect the cutting.

Then, make a loose seam at the edge that was just overlocked.

Keep one thread and pull another one to create the ruffle.

Make sure the width of the ruffle in the end is the same as the width of the skirt.

Now, connect the ruffle to the end of the skirt. Use pins to fix them together and then sew.

THE WAISTBAND

At the top of the skirt, mark at 4cm inside from two sides.

Make a second mark at 20cm at the side line after.

Then, draw a curved line to connect two marks together.

After sewing, try the skirt on to measure the waist of the skirt to fit the body.

Remember to mark where the measurement is made to make the darts later.

Two big darts can be made at the back only or two small darts can be made at the front too.

Based on the marks, make the dart by drawing two triangles facing each other.

The width of the triangle is half between two marks made.

The length of the triangle is 25cm.

Then, fold two triangles together and sew.

Use the leftover fabric of the shirt to make the waistband for the skirt.

Draw two rectangles with 10cm width…

… and 34cm length which is half of the waist size plus 2cm for seam allowance.

After cutting, connect two sides of the rectangles together to have a long waistband with the length of the waist size.

Use the iron to create the fold for the waistband.

Make two folds at two sides of the waistband first.

Then, fold them in half to finish the waistband.

Now, connect the waistband to the main body of the skirt and sew.

The last step is installing the button and making the button hole at the top of the skirt.

And I've finished this DIY. Here's my final transformation!

This skirt is very easy to mix with a white T-shirt or a turtle neck T-shirt for this season.

And it won't be too difficult to make. So I hope you will give it a try.

Until next week, happy sewing!
