DIY Ruffle sleeve tiered baby doll dress
Welcome or welcome back to my sewing blog!
In today's blog, I'm going to share with you how I made a ruffle sleeve tiered baby doll dress. This is a little upgrade from the ruffle top that I shared with you before. That's why it's a beginner friendly sewing DIYs.
So I hope you will like it and try it out. Let’s get started!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
2.5m of soft cotton fabric (The width of the fabric is 130cm)
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Thread
Pencil
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
SEWING THE DRESS
THE TOP PART
The top part
Cut two rectangles with a length of 30 cm, which is the length from the shoulder to under the breast plus 2 cm for seam allowance, and a width of 60 cm, which is one and a half times half of your bust size.
Draw a straight line in the middle of the rectangle to divide it into two smaller ones.
The neckline
From the top of the straight line, mark two sides 11 cm on the width line, which is half of the neck of the dress that you want minus 1 cm for seam allowance. The width between two marks will be 22 cm, which is the width of the neck that you want minus 2 cm for seam allowance.
From the top of the straight line, mark out 8 cm, which is the length of the neck of the dress that you want minus 1 cm for seam allowance.
Then connect this mark to the two marks on the width line you made before. Based on this line, draw a slightly curved line to finish the neckline of the dress. Make sure the total length of the neckline from the front to the back will be bigger than your head so you can wear the dress later.
The shoulder line
At the end of the top width line, mark down on the length line 4 cm, which is 1/9 of your shoulder size. Then connect this mark to one end of the neckline next to it to finish the shoulder line of the top part.
Based on the shoulder line, draw a perpendicular line from the end of it. The length of this line will be 22 cm, which is the length from the shoulder to the armpit plus 2 cm for seam allowance. It’s the width of the sleeve that you want.
The sleeve line
At the end of the straight line, mark two sides on the width line 22 cm, which is a quarter of your bust size plus 2 cm for seam allowance.
Then draw a curved line from this mark to connect to the end of the sleeve line. Fold the rectangle in half by the straight line and cut along the drawing lines.
Here’s the top part after cutting.
Connect two pieces of the top part together at the shoulder and two side lines.
After sewing, measure the width of the neck to cut a long fabric line.
The width of the fabric line will be 2 cm and the length will be 2 cm longer than the width of the neckline.
Connect two width lines of the rectangle together to create a circle fabric first.
Then connect one side of the circle fabric to the neck and sew them together.
After that, fold the other side of the circle fabric inside two times to hide the end fabric inside and make the second seam.
THE RUFFLE PART
The width of the ruffle part
Measure the width of the sleeve first, then cut a rectangle with a width of 8 cm, which is the width of the ruffle part at the sleeve that you want plus 2 cm for seam allowance, and a length of 60 cm, which is one and a half times the width of the sleeve.
Fold the rectangle in half by the width line first.
From the top of the width line, mark in the middle, then draw a slightly curved line from this mark to the top of the folding line.
After cutting, sew the rest of the width line together to create a circle fabric.
Finish the curved line of the ruffle part by folding the end fabric inside two times with a half centimeter each time, then sewing.
At the other side of the circle fabric, make a loose seam first, then create the gathering fabric there later.
The final length of the gathering fabric will be 40 cm, which is the same as the sleeve line, so you can connect them together later.
You will need to make two ruffle pieces like this for two sleeves.
And we will finish the top part of the dress after sewing.
THE SKIRT PART
The skirt part
We will create three tiers for this dress.
The length of the skirt will be from under the breast to above the knee or wherever you want. To make it simple, you make three tiers with the same length, but you can make them different if you want.
The first tier
The first tier
The first tier is 20 cm in length and 126 cm in width, which is one and a half times the width of the top part or one and a half times your bust size.
Connect two length lines of the third tier together to create a circle fabric first.
After that, make a loose seam at one side of the circle fabric to create the gathering look there later.
The final width of the gathering fabric will be 84 cm, which is the same as the width of the top part, so you can connect them together later.
The second tier
The second tier is 20 cm in length and 189 cm in width, which is one and a half times the width of the first tier or 2.25 times your bust size. If you don’t have enough fabric, you can cut two pieces of fabric and connect them together like you did.
Connect two lane lines of the second tier together to create a circle fabric first.
After that, make a loose seam at one side of the circle fabric to create the gathering look there later.
The final width of the gathering fabric will be 126 cm, which is the same as the width of the first tier, so you can connect them together later.
The third tier
The third tier
The third tier is 20 cm in length and 283 cm in width, which is one and a half times the width of the second tier or 3.375 times your bust size. If you don’t have enough fabric, you can cut two or three pieces and connect them together to have a long one.
Connect two length lines of the third tier together to create the circle fabric first.
After that, finish one side of the circle fabric by folding the end fabric inside two times with a half centimeter each time and sewing.
At the other side of the circle fabric, make a loose seam first, then create a gathering fabric there later.
The final width of the gathering fabric will be 189 cm, which is the same as the width of the second tier, so you can connect them together later.
And here are your three tiers of the skirt after all.
Connect the third tier to the second tier and the second tier to the first tier to finish the skirt part of the dress.
The last step is connecting the top part and the skirt part together.
