DIY Sleepwear

Welcome or welcome back to my sewing blog!

In today's blog, I'm going to share with you how I made my sleepwear clothes. It's a sleeveless ruffle hem dress. This dress is very comfortable to wear during the night. It's also a very beginner friendly DIY.

So I hope you will like it and try it out. Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 1.5m of muslin fabric

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Thread

  • Pencil

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

SEWING THE DRESS

THE MAIN PART

THE BODY OF THE DRESS

The body of the dress

  1. Cut two rectangles for the front and the back of the body of the dress.

  2. The width of the rectangle is 70 cm, which is one and a half times half of your hip size, and the length is 90 cm, which is the length from about your breast to your knee. This is the length of the dress that you want minus the length of the ruffle hem.

  3. At one width line, which will be the top of the dress, mark down 14 cm from one end of the width line. This is the length from the top of the dress to the middle of your breast.

  4. From the end of the width line, mark inside 10 cm. This is the width from the side of the body to the middle of the breast.

  5. Then connect the two marks together. After that, draw a curved line beyond it to create a sleeve line for the dress.

  6. Do the same for the other side of the width line to finish the other sleeve line for the dress.

After cutting, connect the two pieces of the body of the dress at two sides using pins, then sew.

At the top of the dress, make a loose seam for the front and the back first.

Then, create the gathering fabric there later.

The final width of the gathering fabric will be 24 cm, which is the width between 2 inside shoulders.

This is also the position for two shoulder straps of the dress.

THE HEM AT THE TOP

The hem at the top

  1. To finish the top of the dress, cut a long rectangle with a width of 3 cm and a length of 24 cm, which is the same length as the gathering fabric you just finished.

Connect the rectangle to the gathering fabric line at one length line first, then sew.

After that, fold the other length line of the rectangle inside around 1 cm first, then keep folding it over the first seam to hide the end fabric inside and make the second seam.

Do the same for the front and the back of the top of the dress.

THE SHOULDER STRAP

  1. To finish the sleeve and also make the shoulder strap for the dress, cut a long rectangle with a width of 3 cm and a length of 60 cm, which is two times the length from the shoulder to the top of the dress plus the length of the sleeve line from the front to the back of the dress.

The shoulder strap

Connect the two width lines of the rectangle together to create a circular fabric first.

Then, connect one length line of the circular fabric to the sleeve line and sew.

After that, fold the other length line of the circular fabric inside around one centimeter first, then keep folding it over the first seam to hide the end fabric inside and make the second seam.

THE RUFFLE HEM

  1. Cut a long rectangle with a length of 15 cm, which is the length of the ruffle part that you want, and a width of 150 cm, which is one and a half times your hip size.

The ruffle hem of the dress

Cut two rectangles like this.

Then, connect them together at the land lines to create a circular fabric.

After sewing, fold one width line of the circular fabric inside one centimeter first, then keep folding it again.

And, sew to finish the end of the ruffle, which is the end of the dress.

At the other width line, make a loose seam first, then create the gathering fabric there later.

The final width of the gathering fabric will be 140 cm, which is the same width as the ends of the dress and the body part, so you can connect them together later.

The last step is connecting the ruffle to the end of the dress.
