DIY Shorts and skirt from man's pants
DIY Shorts and skirt from man's pants
Welcome or welcome back to my sewing blog!
Today's tutorial is having so much vintage vibe that I have been affected a lot recently. I'm going to share with you how I transformed a man's pants into a shorts and a mini skirt. These DIYs are a great way to re-use or recycle a man's pants into your new clothes. They're very comfortable but still fashionable. I added a little vintage vibe in them to give them a different feeling.
I hope you will love them as much as I do. And don't be afraid of trying them out. They're not too difficult as you think.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Man's pants in big size
Pattern paper
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Ruler
Long stick
SHORTS
Firstly, measure the desired length of the shorts, which is 40cm.
Then, mark at 43cm, which is 3cm extra.
However, you also need to check the remaining length of the fabric to ensure it’s longer than half of your hip size, so you have enough fabric to make the skirt later.
After cutting, turn the shorts inside out and draw two lines at the legs, one line at 1.5cm and another at 5cm from the end of the legs.
Fold the end of the legs to the first line, then fold it to the second line.
Then, use pins to hold the final fold in place and then sew.
Move to the top of the shorts, un-sew the waistband first.
Then, un-sew the front folds.
Check the width of the original pants to know how much fabric you will fold in later.
And it's 24cm.
So, I make two folds at the left and two folds at the right of the front shorts, each fold being 6cm.
Then, sew around 4 cm down from the top of each fold to keep it there.
After that, fold the top of the pocket to the new front waistline you just created.
No matter how much fabric you will fold in, just need to make sure the final width of the front has to be a half of your waist size.
Moving to the back of the shorts, un-sew the seam at the crotch first.
Then, mark the new width of the back to fold in.
And, sewing.
Also, make the second seam outside to make it look similar to the original seam of the pants.
Now, fix the waistband to the new waistline.
Start at the buttonhole side of the waistband first, then I can cut the extra waistband at the button side after, and sew.
The last step is installing the button to the new button position.

And I finished my vintage shorts! Here is how it looks.
Do you feel the vintage vibe in this outfit? I love how comfortable and fashionable it turns out very much.
2. SKIRT
Next, make a skirt from the leftover fabric of the legs.
Firstly, un-sew the inside seam of the legs.
Then, get the maximum length of the fabric, which is 42cm. This will be the length of the skirt.
So, you need to ensure it’s long enough to cover your butt when wearing, meaning it has to be from your belly button to over the crotch.
After that, measure the width of the skirt.
Make sure the width of each fabric has to be a half of your hip size + 2cm.
After cutting, overlock the fabric.
Then, connect two pieces of the fabric at one side.
Fold one length of the fabric inside to create the end of the skirt, then sewing.
Fold two sides of the width together, then fix it at the middle of the skirt.
At two sides of the skirt, mark at 4cm inside.
Then, draw a curved line from that mark to the middle of the length. It's the curve of your body at 2 sides, from your hip to your butt.
After that, wear the skirt to note how much fabric you need to fold in at the back and the front of the skirt.
Then, base on that marks to draw the lines to sew later.
Use the leftover fabric of the pants to make a long rectangle with around 4cm width and 70cm length, which is longer than your waist size. This will be your inside waistband.
Connect it to the top of the skirt at the waistline.
After the first seam, make the second seam on the inside to gather all the fabric to one side.
Then, iron to create the fold for the waistband.
The last step is installing the buttons and making the buttonholes at the front of the skirt.
