DIY SMOCKED DRESS from scratch

Welcome or welcome back to my channel!

It's going to summer here. Are you having any plans for this season?

I'm so happy that my best friend moved back here after years. We just celebrated our 7 years of friendship last month on our birthday month. Therefore, I made these dress for us. This dress is very easy to make. And it also fits your body easily without making a complicated measurement. And it just need a piece of fabric.

Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 1 m of loose linen fabric

  • Pattern paper

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Long stick

SEWING THE DRESS

THE BODY

Fold the fabric in half and measure the width of the dress desired—53 cm, which is 1.5 times a half of bust size. The total width of the dress will be 106 cm.

Make sure it is bigger than the hip size to create the puffy effect for the dress.

Next step, measure the length of the dress—75 cm, which is the length from the bust to above the knee or wherever preferred.

Then, cut along the drawing line so in the end, there will be a rectangle with 106 cm width and 75 cm length.

At the width of the rectangle, fold the edge twice to hide the raw cut.

Fold it as small as possible, then sew.

From the top, measure 2 cm down and draw a horizontal line.

Then, from that line, measure 20 cm down, which is the bust width, and draw another horizontal line.

Between these two lines, draw other lines 1 cm apart from each other. These will be the lines for the shirring.

Use the elastic thread as the under thread and sew with normal straight stitching to create the shirring.

THE BUTTON

Now, make the button area for the dress by drawing two rectangles, each 5 cm width and 75 cm length, which is the length of the dress.

After that, I connect one end of each rectangle together.

Then, use an iron to create folds at the edges of the long rectangles.

Connect each side of the rectangle to one side of the dress, from the top to the end then use the pins to hold them together and sew.

Next step, finish the bottom of the dress by folding the fabric twice, similar to what was done for the top.

Then, sew the fold.

THE TIES

Make the ties for the dress by drawing four rectangles, each 3 cm wide and around 55 cm long.

After cutting, fold them in half and sew.

Use a small safety pin to turn them right side out.

The last step is to attach the ties to the top of the dress.

Then, sew them in place.

For a final touch, add wooden buttons to the button area to give the dress a vintage vibe.

And that’s the finished DIY!

This dress was so easy to make and didn’t require much fabric, yet it turned out super cute and perfect for summer. My friend and I had a great time filming with it.
