Welcome and welcome back to my sewing blog!

In today's blog, I'm going to share with you how I transformed 2 men's shirts into a beautiful but fashionable ruffle dress. This dress is very comfortable with the oversize style. But it's also on trend with the fashion world now. And it's not too complicated to make by yourself. So why not to give it a short?

Let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 2 Men's shirts in XXL size

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

SEWING THE DRESS

THE BODY

The first step is to remove the front pocket of the main shirt.

After that, un-sew the top of the collar.

Then, sew to create the new look for the neck.

Measure the length of the dress before the ruffle hem at 55cm, which is the length from the shoulder to the hip.

Draw a line there.

THE HANDS

After cutting along the drawn line, un-sew two hands of the shirt.

Also, un-sew two hands of the second shirt.

Use two hands of one shirt to make one new hand for the new dress.

On one hand, cut at 19 cm.

On another hand, cut at the middle.

Then, connect them together and sew.

Don’t forget to overlock the fabric after that.

At two sides of the new hand, draw the new lines at the gap to connect them together.

After cutting, overlock there to protect the fabric.

Make sure the length at two sides of the hand has to be the same.

Now, make a loose seam at the hand by using the maximum range of the stitching.

Keep one thread and pull another one to create the ruffle.

Make sure the width of the new hand has to be the same with the old hand.

Then, connect the hands to the shirt and sew.

After that, sew two under armpit lines together.

At the end of the hand, fold it twice to hide the end fabric and sew it to finish the hand.

THE BOTTOM

Move to the end of the shirt, draw a line at one side at 13 cm from the end.

Because I want to have a second level of the ruffle there so I un-sew one side of the shirt to that line and cut by the drawn line.

Now, use the second shirt to create the ruffle hem for the dress.

Remove the front pocket first.

Then, draw a straight line at the end of the second shirt.

From that line, draw another line at 30cm.

So the length of the ruffle will be 30cm.

Remove the button and cut the button area there to have a long rectangle.

Cut the rest of the second shirt along the shoulder line.

Then, draw another rectangle with 30cm length too.

Remove the button and cut the button area at that rectangle.

Then, connect it to the first rectangle cut before that. Then, sew along the pinned line.

At one width of the fabric, fold it twice to hide the end fabric inside.

And sew along the folded line.

Overlock the other side of the fabric later as well.

Then, make a loose seam there to create the ruffle by using the maximum range of the stitching.

Make sure the width of the ruffle has to be the same with the width of the shirt.

And it’ll be the ruffle hem of the new dress.

Use the rest fabric of the second shirt to create the second ruffle.

Fold three edges of the rectangle twice to hide the end fabric inside. Then, sew along the folded line.

At the rest edge of the rectangle, overlock it by the zigzag stitching first.

Then, make a loose seam later.

Make sure the width of the second ruffle has to be a quarter of the width of the shirt.

Now, connect the second ruffle to one side of the shirt at the cutting made before.

A tip here is the width of the ruffle should be a little shorter at the side. So it can be outside of the side seam when sewing later.

Because of the second ruffle, the cutting at the end is not equal. So, cut it again and also overlock it after that.

The last step is connecting the ruffle hem to the end of the shirt.

And sew along the pinned line.
