T-SHIRT TRANSFORMATION - Refashion old boring T-shirts into 4 different styles of crop top

If you have a plain white t-shirt that’s just sitting in your wardrobe, it’s time to give it a makeover. Today, we’re going to transform that simple t-shirt into four different, cool, and unique styles of crop tops.

These DIY crop top tutorials are beginner-friendly and quick to complete - they won’t take more than thirty minutes of your time. So, if you’re ready to breathe new life into your old t-shirt, let’s get started!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • White t-shirts

  • Scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Elastic band

  • Pins

  • Fabric chalk

  • Measuring tape

  • Sewing machine

  1. ELASTIC HEM CROP TOP

Use a medium-sized T-shirt which is one side bigger than normal size.

Mark a point 38 cm down from the shoulder of the T-shirt. This is the width from the shoulder to the belly button. Draw a horizontal line at this point.

After cutting along this line, use the leftover fabric of the t-shirt to cut a circular piece with a width of 10 cm. This will serve as the fabric hole for the elastic band later.

Fold the circular fabric in half and connect it to the end of the t-shirt.

Remember to leave a small un-sew space when sewing so you can insert the elastic band later.

Use an elastic band with a width of 4 cm for this crop top. The length should be around 60 cm, which is 4 cm shorter than your waist size.

Use a small safety pin to thread the elastic band through the fabric hole.

Then, sew the two ends of the elastic band and sew the un-sew space at the end.

For the sleeve of the t-shirt, fold the end two times outward and sew a short seam at the top and the bottom of the sleeve to secure it.

And voila! You’ve successfully transformed a regular t-shirt into a sporty crop top. This DIY project is perfect for those who lead an active lifestyle.

2. RUFFLE CROP TOP

Use a small-sized T-shirt for this ruffle crop top. This T-shirt should not be too tight.

Mark a point 30 cm down from the shoulder of the t-shirt. This measurement is the width from your shoulder to under the breast.

At the leftover fabric of the t-shirt, un-sew the hem at the end.

Check the total width of the fabric so you can divide the fabric into two equal parts. It should be 17 cm at each part.

Connect two parts together to become a circular fabric.

After that, fold one end of the circular fabric inside two times to hide the cutting and sewing.

At the other end of the circular fabric, make a loose seam by using the maximum thread stand of your sewing machine.

Then, put one twist to create a ruffle. Make sure the final width of the ruffle is the same as the T-shirt so you can connect them together.

Fit two sides of the t-shirt to the ruffle first then fit the rest later and sew.

And there you have it! You’ve skillfully turned a basic T-shirt into a pretty ruffle crop top. This DIY project is ideal for those looking to bring a sweet touch to their wardrobe.

3. TWISTED CROP TOP

For this third crop top, I recommend using a small-size T-shirt.

Draw a straight line at the middle of the T-shirt.

Next, mark a point 22 cm down from the neck. This is the width from the neck to the middle of your breast.

Then, cut from the end to that mark.

Un-sew two sides of the t-shirt up to the same height of the mark at the middle.

At the end of the T-shirt, fold two ends of each side together first. Then, fold two sides across each other two times to create a twist. Make sure the folding line at each side stays at the end.

Connect the folding part at each side to the upper line to close the hole between them. Remember to cut the extra fabric after that.

Use pins to connect the front and the back of the t-shirt together at two sides.

Then, mark at the end of the connecting.

From that mark, draw a horizontal line on the back of the t-shirt first. Then, draw another horizontal line at 2 cm under the first line.

After cutting, at the second horizontal line, fold it to the first line and sew it to finish the end of the back.

Finally, sew the front and the back together at two sides.

You’ve changed a normal t-shirt into a cool twisted crop top. This fun project is good for those who want to make their clothes a bit more exciting.

4. RUFFLE SLEEVE CROP TOP

Use a medium-sized T-shirt for this chic crop top.

Cut a small piece with a width of 7 cm from the end of the T-shirt. This will be used to make the ruffle for the sleeve of the crop top. Make sure the width of the t-shirt is larger than the width of the sleeve.

Next, create a loose seam at the other end of the rectangle to create the ruffle.

Check to ensure the width of the ruffle matches the width of the sleeve.

At the sleeve, un-sew the seam at the end first. If your sleeve is long, you can cut it off.

Connect the ruffle part to the end of the sleeve and sew it to the end of the sleeve.

To create a new ending for the crop top, draw a line 5 cm above the ending line.

Fold the ending line to the line you just drew and sew it. To make it look nicer, make two seams.

And there you have it! I’ve completed this DIY project, creating a unique ruffle sleeve crop top that’s not just different, but also symbolizes strength.
